What Is Ca in Chemistry?I recently was talking to someone who said that what is ca in chemistry was a mystery to her. This was not the first time that she has had to ask this question, and it seems that she is not alone in this situation. But there is a fairly simple answer to this question and it can be used by those who are interested in the subject.What is Ca in chemistry is simply calcium. Calcium is the basic building block of everything we use. You might think of the bended spoon as one example of something that requires a good bit of calcium. Bending spoons are made from stainless steel, and because of the way that they bend, there is a good deal of calcium in them. When you apply pressure on the ends of a spoon, the force that is applied actually pushes calcium out of the blade.What is Ca in chemistry is the element carbon. Carbon is the same as the chemical element carbon dioxide, or CO2. CO2 is the major constituent of our atmosphere, and even though it is nothing to worry about, it is still a very dangerous substance. The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is currently greater than all of the other elements put together, and the fact that the planet is getting warmer is going to do serious damage to all of our life forms, in terms of their ability to breathe and digest food.But what is Ca in chemistry is a compound that combines calcium with carbon. So if we dissolve in this compound carbon and calcium, then we have a compound that does not contain any carbon. Learn Like a Parrot with Language Shadowing Ever had a parrot?Even if you havent, you know what theyre famous for: repeating what you say, for better or worse.Depending on the conversations you have at home (or just to yourself) this could be enlightening, hilarious or embarrassingâ€"but no matter what, a parrots natural ability to mimic human language is downright impressive.But why are we talking about parrots?Because its time to parrot the parrots.With a technique called language shadowing, youll be acting like a parrot doesâ€"repeating what you hear in a foreign language, even if you dont fully understand it right away.Of course, as Im sure youll be glad to hear, the difference is that over time youll actually start to learn your target language through this repetition and imitation.Well show you how this unconventional learning method works and how you can start shadowing successfully in five steps. Polly Want Fluency! Learn Like a Parrot with Language ShadowingWhat Is Language Shadowing?Linguist Alexander Arguelles is considered the inventor of language shadowing. Hes created a series of videos focused on teaching and demonstrating the technique.Arguelles defines shadowing as a language learning technique where the student listens to a recording of target language audio, and simultaneously echoes what they hear. Shadowing is designed to force you to focus on the sounds of your target language and develop pronunciation that mimics a native speaker.Ideally, youll eventually also  start to absorb vocabulary, grammar rules and natural sentence structures.According to Arguelles, you wont get the best results from your desk. He recommends doing three things while shadowing to improve your focus and memory:Walking outside swiftlyMaintaining a good postureRepeating aloud in a loud, articulate mannerArguelles, himself a polyglot, has spent most of his academic career working with Korean, and has written several publications on the language and language in general.While Arguelles mayve developed the shadow ing technique into a concrete learning method, there are people whove been using shadowing prior to it having this name.Who Should Consider Language Shadowing?This technique works best for a few types of people:Auditory learnersStudents who learn best with structured study plansPolyglots (if youve already learned a foreign language, speaking with unfamiliar sounds isnt as scary)Even if you dont fall into one of those groups, this out-of-the-box learning method can help energize your same old, same old study plan. Plus, the focused pronunciation practice is inherently valuable, especially if you dont have lots of other opportunities for target language speaking practice.Youll also develop your target language intonation,  the natural melody or pattern of your speech. Depending on the emphasis you consciously or subconsciously place on certain syllables or words while speaking, a sentence can have a slightly different meaning. Intonation develops over time and is affected by how we he ar others speak.So with language shadowing, our intonation develops as we listen and repeat, the same way it does with our native language. Both accents and intonation are crucial to achieving language fluency, so you sound much more natural when you speak, instead of like youre reading from a textbook.Of course,  there are many different ways to approach learning a new language, and shadowing doesnt work for everyone. Like any other method, your individual success with shadowing is dependent on how much time, effort and dedication you put into it.How to Shadow SuccessfullyThe guide below is based on the structure laid out in  Arguelles video Shadowing Step by Step.1. Choose Your Audio ResourceWhat kind of audio should you be listening to?Audiobooks read by a native speaker in your target language are one great optionâ€"LibriVox is a great place to find audiobooks in many different languages. For shorter, more digestible listening, try podcasts in your target language.Youll also wan t to make sure your audio resource has a text component with an English translation  (for example, an e-book version of your audiobook in both languages). Listen and Repeat While Walking AroundAn unconventional but critical part of language shadowing is walking around while listening to and repeating your audio resource.As a non-native speaker, early on its tricky to speak in a foreign language while doing something else, even the simple task of walking. This exercise is designed to get you out of your comfort zone and focusing actively on what youre hearing. It also gives a regimented feel to your shadowing practice, making it harder for you to space out or get lazy with your pronunciation.Walking or pacing while shadowing will seem uncomfortable at first, especially since many of us are inclined to sit down while studying. But as you keep going itll become easier and more natural.Do this step several times until you feel comfortable repeating all of the sounds.3. Listen and Repeat While Reading the English TranslationNow you can start learning what youve actually been saying this whole time!Go back to the start of your audio passage and shadow while reading the English translation of your book or transcript. As Arguelles puts it, this will give you a global understanding of what youre listening to and saying. Youll start to associate meaning with the target language sounds in a natural way.Again, r epeat this stage several times. While you might want to stop pacing around for your own safety, Arguelles still recommends holding your text out in front of you rather than at your lap and keeping an upright posture.4. Listen and Repeat While Reading the Target Language TranscriptAt this stage, youll be reading the target language words as you speak them. If the audio is slow enough, you can actively move your eyes between the target language text and translation to compare the individual words and their meanings (Arguelles recommends you start this stage in this way).Eventually, you should be shadowing your target language and reading your target language only, but understanding what it is youre hearing and saying.The essential idea here is that over time, as you shadow with more and more material, youll learn how to speak and understand words and phrases in your target language in a big picture, natural way. You wont be translating one-to-one between English and your target langua ge, which means you can achieve fluency faster.5. Repeat DailyLanguage shadowing requires daily effort and dedication from the learner. It might feel laborious at first, but proponents of language shadowing say that with this method, learning a language is a much quicker process overall.Why? Along with the benefits noted above, Arguelles and his students say its because of the discipline required, as well as the immersive nature of this method.For me, language shadowing is another learning method to add to my bag of techniques. Shadowing is something I incorporate into learning a new language, but I also use other methods, like journaling for writing practice or language apps to learn grammar and vocabulary. I think one of the best things you can do when learning a new language is to try a variety of methods before homing in on the ones that work best for your unique learning style and lifestyle. As someone whos tried to learn languages using more conventional methods before, I woul d recommend that anyone interested in language shadowing give it a try.After all, if its good enough for parrots, its good enough for me!

The GCSE results are in!

The GCSE results are in! GCSE results are released today, ending months of suspense as candidates finally find out what months of hard work and revision has achieved. Don't let the relief of finally knowing your grades become tainted by press reports of the first fall in A*-C grades in 24 years. The slip in A*-C grades is only 0.4%! In recent years the tone has always been that exams are getting easier and easier, the grading more lenient, so perhaps a more demanding marking scheme is simply a response to this, and may explain the minimal drop in top grades. This is a time to focus on what you have managed to do and you should give yourself a pat on the back for making it through your exams. For those of you moving straight onto A-Levels, we wish you the best of luck. But, if you feel your marks are unfair or an unrealistic assessment of your abilities there are things you can do. Should you wish to improve your marks there will be opportunities to resit exams - resits generally take place between November and January. Or, if you feel your exam results are at odds with the results you were achieving through coursework, teachers will generally be more than willing to help you appeal your marks. A more comprehensive overview of what to do in light of disappointing GCSE results can be found on the BBC website. It should also be recognised that the academic environment is simply not for everyone. Vocational courses generally do not require exceptional GCSE results, and can offer more practical and enjoyable career alternatives to those who can't wait to leave school. Whatever results you receive today, just remember that there will be plenty more opportunities to prove yourself! GCSEs are most definitely not the be-and-end all. If anything, the results you get today should help you make a more informed decision of what you want from the future, and what career may be best for you! Web Stats in July 2011 July 2011 was a very poor performing month. The vacation, school end and summer break have contributed to this performance slump. There is no systemic problem with your strategy or technology. Therefore, we remain optimistic about our long-term traffic and look forward to the upcoming back to school season. There were 118 unique, non-spam lead (down from 209 in June). 1,860 visitors came to Tutorz. (3,210 in June). The visitor-to-lead conversion ratio dropped slightly to 6.3% (from 6.5% in June). Only 21 new tutors signed up (in June it was 31). The traffic loss also caused Alexa’s to lower Tutorz’ Global Rank down to 12.8 million (12.6 million in June) and the U.S. local rank down to 550,00 (310,000 in June). What is it Like to Attend the State University of New York at Geneseo Chase is a current senior at the State University of New York at Geneseo. He is majoring in Spanish and international relations. He specializes in various levels of Spanish tutoring. Below, he shares his experience at SUNY Geneseo: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Chase: The SUNY Geneseo campus is the perfect size, neither too big nor too small. The freshman side of campus, sometimes referred to as the south side, is somewhat separated from the rest of the campus. However, its still less than a 10-minute walk to the academic buildings. The campus itself is located next to Main Street, which has restaurants and coffee shops. There is also a campus bus system that takes you around to different locations on campus, as well as to the local grocery store. A car is not necessary unless you live off campus as an upperclassman, although most off-campus living options are within walking distance of campus. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Chase: The professors and TAs are available as much as you need them. As with any other college or university, they will not seek you out. Rather, if you need extra help or have any questions, they are a simple email away. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Chase: The dorm life situation is what you would find at any SUNY school and provides many opportunities for socialization. They recently added a new dorm, which is very modern and nice. They also recently renovated the on-campus dining hall, which has gotten much better since my freshman year. They offer gluten-free and other options for those with dietary limitations. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Chase: From my experience, Geneseo is best known for its science department, specifically physics, as well as their school of education. That is not to say that all other majors are obsolete, just that those are what the school is best known for. I, for example, double major in Spanish and international relations; I have received an excellent education for both of these concentrations. The history and political science professors were all very knowledgeable, engaging, and have superb credentials. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Chase: It was not difficult to meet people as a freshman. Geneseo has a thriving Greek life community, which I would recommend if you enjoy meeting new people. At Geneseo, its really important to get involved in an organization, whether that is a fraternity, sorority, sports team, or club. Since the school itself is rather small, its important to be in something, which in turn facilitates the process of meeting friends. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Chase: Geneseo has a really strong alumni base that helps current students get jobs or internships post-graduation. I have had friends who have gained employment because of a Geneseo connection. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Chase: There are an abundance of places to study on campus. Most academic buildings are open until 2 AM, so there is always a quiet place to study. Describe the surrounding town. Chase: Geneseo is basically in the middle of nowhere in upstate New York, which can be a bit of a culture shock for students coming from the downstate area. The closest big city is Rochester, which is about a half hour away. So, I would say there is not much to do outside the immediate vicinity of campus. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing, because it means that everyone will always be on or around campus, which leads to a more close-knit community. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Chase: I believe there are currently about 5,000 undergrad students. The class sizes were one of the main reasons I chose to attend Geneseo. Obviously, introductory lecture classes and some science classes will have over 100 students per class. Aside from those classes, though, my average class size was about 20-25 students. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Chase: My most memorable experience with a professor was in my Latin American history class my junior year. Songwriting 101 Using the Long-Line Concept Megan L. One of the most wonderful and rewarding things about the art of songwriting is that there are many different ways to approach making your own music. Arlington,TX music teacher Ric F. previously shared with us his tips on using rhythm as a guide to writing. Today, Ric would like to add another aspect to your understanding of writing songs, something he calls the long-line concept. Unlike visual art where you can see it all at once, music takes “time” to reveal itself. Today I would like to talk about the “long-line” concept. Long-line does not mean the music has to be “long” or a “line” (melody). Any of the elements of music may be used as your primary element. In songwriting it is usually the melody. The result that you want is to be able to get from here (beginning) to there (end) giving your listener a sense of completeness and natural progression. Many elements go into accomplishing this, but your ability to write horizontally will greatly help you. As a songwriter and teacher, I preach this because I have noticed that many students are no longer taught this concept due to a number of reasons. One is… Technology I use lots of technology and love it! But I learned my craft before the technology we currently use developed so I am a bit old school in my work. Technology allows us to bring up a digital score or get our hands on sounds by way of multiple keyboards and find ourselves in this position… Many students come to me with a digital score (i.e. orchestral) with two or so measures full of notes from the top stave down to the bottom and say something like this: “I love these two measures but I don’t know where to go from here â€" I’m stuck!”  I also have students come with a recording of two or so measures of a song, completely produced and say the same. Answer? They did not conceive the song as best they could from beginning to end. They did not determine an element that could help them get the long-line, thinking “horizontally”. They thought “vertically” and that’s why they’re stuck! Before going further, let me say that what I am talking about is not a rule. How you write your music is totally up to you, and all composer-songwriters have different processes. If you can play your melody with no accompaniment and it holds your listeners interest from beginning to end, you have something! As a teacher I use melody because it is something that anyone can create. You do not have to be an instrumental virtuoso to write a melody. Let’s proceed… As an example, below is the structure of an instrumental song of mine that was recently recorded and released. It has these sections: Intro (A) section: Presentation of the melody in basic “verse” form (B) section: 8 measures. Melody range higher. The 5th measure is the “hook” (higher the melody has been building toward this moment) Vamp Note: The Intro has no melody. The (A) section has melody in a lower range. The (B) section has melody higher in its range leading up to the “hook” where the melody is at its highest point.   The “Vamp” has its melodic element in the accompaniment. It is a motif based on the melody and not essential as a melodic element. If you play the melodies of these sections in succession they will stand up on their own â€" as a song. The “melody” is my long-line. It is what drives the song from beginning to end. Assignment Use this simple song form (simple does NOT equate bad!) to write your own composition. (A) = 8 measures / (A) again, maybe some small changes / (B) something different, yet related / (A) again, perhaps exactly as the first (A) section or slightly different.
